Here is a list of seed companies, with addresses, phone, website address, ordering information, catalog cost, and a general description provided. Some of these I have ordered from and some not, and I have catalogs from many of them. I will give general comments about any that I have experience with. The goal is to acquire catalogs from all the companies on the list in order to provide some first hand knowledge of their inventory. If I were to list the best value of the ones I have seen so far are 1) Willhite, 2) Mellinger’s, 3) Comstock, Ferre, & Co., 4) D. L. Landreth, 5) Shumway’s, 6) Gurney’s and 7) Burpee. Willhite by far and away has the best prices, and without knowing their germination percentage, they look like the most bang for your buck. Mellinger’s is only slightly more expensive and Comstock just below that. However, on herbs both Comstock’s selection and prices are in a league of their own. I ordered over 40 herbs just from their site. I would recommend making them your source for herb seeds. Landreth is a true gem, very competitve on many items, and by far the selection is the best of any company out there. Where they are the best value is on small seeds – beets, spinach, cabbage, etc., most times you can get 1/2 oz (enough seed for 4 or 5 years for most gardeners) for under a dollar, and save yourself a bundle. What I have planted from them has incredible vigor, they just leaped out of the ground. Between them and Willhite I got almost all my small seeded vegetables for under $25, and purchased at least 1/2 oz on everything. On Landreth’s larger seeds though be prepared to buy in quantities of at least 5 lbs. Willhite still beats them though even at this quantity, so check there first. Gurney’s has is a real old time seed company with good selection and prices that are nearly as competitive as the others. Also check out Burpee because of their heirloom catalog, which has a nice selection. I would look at these six first to find the best selection and value.
I have personally ordered from Gurney’s, Willhite, Burpee, Seedsblum, Vermont Bean Seed, DiGiorgi, Shumway’s, Territorial, Mellingers, Comstock & Ferre, Garden City, D.L. Landreth, and Seeds of Change, and I have had good service from all of them. However, I have heard several negatives about Seedsblum, please read my comments about them under their listing. I will say though that Burpee’s germination rates are a little lower than what I would prefer, at least on what I have bought from them, the rest have done good with one exception, which was DiGiorgi seed. However, that was my fault because I bought onions in December, and they were still sending out ’98 seed, and onion seed lasts only 1-2 years. Even at that it still germinated around 50%. Between the top 5 plus Burpee you should find a majority of the vegetables you are looking for without busting your budget. Of the ones who specialize in certain areas, I think Ronningers, Vermont Bean Seed, Tomato Growers Supply, Totally Tomatoes, and also Territorial and Garden City Seed (both specialize in northern adapted varieties) all are great values, particularly on hard-to-find and regional varieties. Shumway’s and Willhite are good sources for those in the South. There are also several Canadian companies listed for you far northern growers. One I like particularly is William Dam Seeds, they have a good selection. Vesey’s also has a few, as does Early’s, and I have more catalogs coming in. Many US companies sell to Canada as well. I hope this information will help you find what you are looking for.
Note: This list is not comprehensive of every company that sells heirloom varieties, but only those with enough selection to be worth ordering from, and especially those with a website.
